Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge.
This week’s picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):
Highway 12, 2008 Sonoma Valley Sauvignon Blanc, $15.
A grassy sauvignon blanc with notes of melon, tropical fruit and a hint of jalapeño. A refreshing quaff.
Seghesio, 2008 Russian River Valley Pinot Grigio, $20.
A crisp pinot grigio with complex flavors. Floral, with notes of honeysuckle, lime zest and mineral. Bright and lively.
Tablas Creek Vineyard, 2007 Cotes de Tablas, Paso Robles, Red Rhone Blend, $25.
A striking Rhone blend, complex and nicely structured. Aromas and flavors of violets, raspberry, mineral and spice. Spot on balance. A blend of 50 percent grenache, with 25 percent syrah and 25 percent counoise.
Grgich Hills Estate, 2008 Napa Valley Fume Blanc, $30.
Crisp, yet full-bodied. Lovely notes of grapefruit, lemongrass and spice. Bright and balanced.
Rosenblum Cellars, 2007 Rockpile Road Vineyard Zinfandel, $35.
An ultra-ripe zin with complex aromas and flavors of boysenberry, black cherry, currant, dark chocolate and spice. Briary.
