Volunteers are being sought to help transform the turf and landscape around City Hall into a water-saving area.

Two hundred people are being asked to help on the project on Saturday, Oct. 24. It will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The city of Petaluma is teaming up with Daily Acts, Petaluma Bounty and Rebuilding Together Petaluma to transform the water-intensive turf landscape around Petaluma City Hall. When the project is completed, it will be a water-harvesting eco-scape, complete with community gardens, water catchment systems and native and edible plants.

“The landscape that will be planted will provide food and habitat as well as serve to demonstrate the cutting edge in water conservation and contemporary design,” according to a press release from Rebuilding Together Petaluma.

Volunteers who come on Saturday will learn the theory and techniques for sheet mulching, water catchment and planting dynamic systems so they can do the same at home.

The project started with a work day on Oct. 12, as 30 volunteers helped remove bushes and cut an edge in the sod around all of the walks.

Volunteers will be provided with coffee, lunch and snacks.
