VIDEO: Dead Fort Bragg blue whale is still there

10/22/2009:A1: Humboldt State University students Tuesday inspect a 72-foot, female blue whale that washed ashore Monday just south of Fort Bragg. A Humboldt State expert estimated the whale weighed more than 50 tons. PC: A blue whale, likely struck and killed by a survey vessel Monday, Oct. 19, along the Mendocino Coast, was evaluated by Humboldt State University students. The whale will be left where itÊis.

As research crews figure out what to do with a 72-foot blue whale on the coast in Mendocino County, it is attracting many onlookers. The whale died after being struck by a research vessel, believed to be the 78-foot Pacific Star. Its crew is under contract to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to update maps of the ocean floor. Here's a video look at the whale:
