A 69-year-old Sonoma man driving a custom hot-rod died Saturday in a solo-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 12, just north of Shainsky Road, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Maynard A. Albertson was ejected from the car about 11:20 a.m. after it ran off the east side of the roadway and struck an embankment. He was not wearing a seatbelt, officials said.

A family member said Albertson had spent more than 4,000 hours customizing the car to resemble a 1937 Ford and included more than 50 one-off fabricated parts.

Through a rearview mirror, a witness saw Albertson lose control of the vehicle, said CHP officials in Napa. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
