The 17-3-2 Panthers received a No.2 seed in the NCS Div. I championships. They play No. 2 15 Healdsburg when the first round begins Wednesday. And if the results follow the seedings, they’ll face No.7 Sonoma on Saturday and No.3 Windsor next Wednesday en route to the section final.

As expected, Marin Catholic (21-2-2) drew the No.1 seed. Elsie Allen got the No. 5, and will host No.12 Montgomery in an all-NBL first-round game. Defending Div. III champion Maria Carrillo is the No.8, Analy the No.9 and Piner the No.13.

Santa Rosa heads into the playoffs feeling healthy and ready. One of the Panthers’ captains, Will Parente, is back at full strength after being a little battered, and two key players — Arturo Camacho and Jesus Morfin — are eligible after making grades. Coach Jon Schwan said Camacho and Morfin will not start, but will play off the bench.

About the only negative for Santa Rosa is that, because of an expanded field of 16 teams, it won’t receive a bye in the first round.

“It changes things a little,” Schwan said. “We were prepared to have five days of practice. Now we’ll tweak a couple things in our practice plans. But 16 teams, in the long run it’s for the greater good.”

Anderson Valley, champion of the NCL II North, got the highest seeding among Empire teams in Div. III, the No.3. Calistoga is No.4, Roseland Prep No.7, Rincon Valley Christian No.11, Fort Bragg No.12, Sonoma Academy No.14 and St. Helena No.15.
