Petaluma and Casa Grande girls open NCS playoffs at home

The league champion Casa Grande and St. Vincent high school girls soccer teams both received first round byes in the North Coast Section playoffs. The Petaluma girls and Casa Grande boys teams are both in the playoffs, but must play first-round games Wednesday,

The Sonoma County League champion Casa Grande girls (13-2-3) will begin defense of their North Coast Section Division I title Saturday on their home field against the winner of Wednesday’s match between Ursuline (12-9-0) and Arcata (13-4-3). The Lady Gauchos were the second seed in the tournament behind Montgomery (19-1-2), the team they have defeated in the NCS finals in each of the last two seasons.

Petaluma’s Lady Trojans (9-4-3), the No. 6 seed, open tournament play Wednesday night at home against Fortuna (12-4-3). A win would advance Petaluma to a Saturday game against Maria Carrillo (16-2-2), the No. 3 seed, on the Maria Carrillo field.

The Casa Grande boys (12-8-2), the No. 11 seed, in the 12-team field, will play Wednesday night at home against Sir Francis Drake High (11-6-5) from the Marin County Athletic League, the No. 6 seed. A win puts the Gaucnhos against the winner of the Windsor (13-1-4) vs. Arcata (16-4-3) game.

In Division III, the St. Vincent girls (14-1-0) will face the winner of Wednesday’s match between Roseland University Prep (11-4-2) and Cloverdale (9-7-4) Saturday at Rancho Cotate.

All games start at 7 p.m.
