Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out restaurant wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week’s picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):

Gundlach Bundschu, 2008 Sonoma Valley Gewurztraminer, $22.50. This dry gewurztraminer is bright and refreshing. Notes of orange blossom, pear, tangerine, lemon peel and spice. Complex and layered. Crisp finish.

Conundrum, 2007 California White Table Wine, $24. This is a not-to-be-missed white blend. Aromas and flavors of honeysuckle, nectarine, peach, herbs and spice. Lush texture. Lovely.

DeCoy, 2007 Napa Valley Red Wine, $30. This cabernet-merlot blend has great structure and a seamless texture. Aromas and flavors of blackberry, herbs and spice. Long finish.

Gloria Ferrer, 2002 Royal Cuvee Brut, $35. Bright, toasty and complex. Notes of brioche, apple, strawberry and toast. Has a refreshing acidity, with underlying layers of richness.

MacPhail, 2007 Ferrington Vineyard, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, $49. This pinot noir has a stunning intensity. It has great balance between its crisp acidity and its concentrated fruit. Complex and layered, with notes of black cherry, herbs and spice. Striking.
