Within an hour's time, two guns were taken out of the hands of alleged Norteño gang members by Santa Rosa police officers patrolling the streets of northwest Santa Rosa Friday night, officials said.
One gun was taken from a bicyclist who ran from police during a traffic stop. The other was secured by officers responding to what looked like a fight in front of a residence.
"This is two less guns off the street, which makes it that much safer in Santa Rosa," said Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Alissa Johnson.
At about 10:30 p.m., an officer patrolling the area of Hardies Lane and Terry Road initiated a traffic stop on a bicyclist for a vehicle code violation. The suspect, William Landrum, 19, of Santa Rosa fled on foot, discarding something as he ran, officials said.
After a brief foot chase, the patrol officer was able to catch Landrum. Officials then located a previously reported stolen handgun after searching the area where he fled. Police said Landrum was a known Norteño gang member.
About an hour later, officers on patrol near the 2700 block of Coffey Lane saw two men who appeared to be fighting in front of a house. When the police approached the two men, one of them, Miguel Garcia, 25, ran into a nearby home.
Police made contact with Garcia and discovered that he was on probation. At that point, officers conducted a probation search of Garcia's home and found the firearm. Garcia, who police said is also known Norteño gang member, was taken into custody on probation and weapon violations.
Police officials said there's no way of telling how many guns are in the hands of gang members in Santa Rosa.
