A man riding a bicycle was critically injured Sunday afternoon in Santa Rosa when he struck a tree and sustained a head injury.

The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was riding downhill, westbound on the sidewalk of Fountain Grove Parkway when he struck a tree just east of Round Barn Boulevard, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department. He was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Alcohol might have been a factor in the accident that occurred at about 4:15 p.m., according to a police report that did not identify the rider. The report described him as being in his 40s.

On Sunday night, police were still searching for witnesses to the accident and asked anyone with information to call 543-3636.
