Sonoma County observes Veterans Day

Veterans Day observances began at dawn today with the raising of a new flag over Juilliard Park.

Members of American Legion Post 21 will be joined by Boy Scouts for the flag-raising scheduled for 6:15 a.m.

Flags are also in place at Calvary Cemetery in Santa Rosa, courtesy of the Knights of Columbus.

Other events include:

Young women taking part in St. Joseph Health System's Circle of Sisters after-school program will make wreaths and place them at the Santa Rosa Veteran's Memorial.

Calistoga will dedicate it's new Veterans Memorial, located at Logvy Park, at 10:30 a.m.

Veterans and others will gather at 10:15 a.m. at the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial across from City Hall for speeches culminating in a 11 a.m. flag-raising by American Legion Post 21.At 1 p.m., men and women in uniform will march in downtown Petaluma at an event billed as the largest Veterans Day parade in the North Bay Area.

The parade grand marshal is recently retired Army Lt. Col. Steve Countouriotis, 57, who served in the Gulf War as well as the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The parade, sponsored by American Legion Post No. 28, begins at Walnut Park at D Street, heads north and winds through town, ending back at Walnut Park.

Road closures include Petaluma Boulevard North between Washington Street and E Street, Fourth/Kentucky Street between Washington Street and I Street and Western Avenue between Keller Street and Water Street.

Some government agencies, schools, services and some businesses will be closed or have modified hours in observance of Veterans Day:
