A 22-year-old woman fell to her death from atop the Mendocino Headlands early Saturday, apparently after slipping into a crevice and dropping up to 75 feet to the beach below.

The victim is believed to have been from out of town, and perhaps out of state, Mendocino County Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Van Hagen said.

But authorities were not immediately able to reach next of kind and confirm her identity, he said.

Mendocino Fire Chief Danny Hervilla said, however, that a friend or acquaintance had been with the woman on the headland at the end of Kasten Street, near Portuguese Beach about 2 a.m.

It was the friend, Hervilla said, who reported that the victim slipped into a crevice about 20 feet long and just continued sliding until she hit the end of the drainage and a sheer drop of 60 to 75 feet.

“She appeared lifeless from the top of the cliff,” he said. “We rappelled down. The medics confirmed that she was not breathing and had no pulse.”

“We got the medics down really quickly, but there was just nothing to be done at that point,” he said. They were unable to revive her.
