Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week’s picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):
New Gewurz, 2008 Mendocino County Gewurztraminer, $9. A lively wine with notes of honeysuckle, pear and citrus flavors. Nutty. Soft texture.
Villa Maria, 2009 New Zealand, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, $15. A grassy sauvignon blanc with a good structure. Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, jalapeño and spice. Crisp acidity.
Domaine Perraud Macon-Villages, 2008 White Burgundy, $17. Floral, with notes of apple, mineral and a hint of butterscotch on the finish. Lovely.
Breggo, 2008 Anderson Valley Gewurztraminer, $25. Floral, with aromas and flavors of honeysuckle, grapefruit and spice. Balanced.
Chateau St. Jean, 2008 Sonoma County Gewurztraminer, $15. Nutty, with a lush texture. Notes of pear, grapefruit, honey and spice. Long, zesty finish.
