Santa Rosa's City Council has selected a new vice mayor by the slimmest of margins.
Councilman Gary Wysocky beat out Councilman Ernesto Olivares on a 4-3 vote Tuesday to replace Marsha Vas Dupre in a post that rotates every year.
The vote reflected the political schism that exists on the council between its more pro-union and environmentally friendly majority of Mayor Susan Gorin, Veronica Jacobi, Vas Dupre and Wysocky and the business-oriented minority of Olivares, Jane Bender and John Sawyer.
Gorin called both Wysocky and Olivares “excellent choices” for the job.
Unlike the vice mayor's position, the mayor's position is a two-year appointment. Gorin continues as mayor through December 2010.
