After every 49ers' game this season, Press Democxrat staff writer Matt Maiocco grades the Niners' performance. Following are his grades for Sunday's loss at Green Bay:

Things could not have gone much worse in the first half. But Smith finished with 227 yards and three touchdown passes with one interception.

Running back

Frank Gore rushed for 59 yards, including a 42-yarder that led to the 49ers first points. He caught a 10-yard scoring pass, but had minus-1 yard on his other two catches.

Tight end Vernon Davis had 108 receiving yards, and Michael Crabtree added 77 yards. Both scored touchdowns. For Crabtree, it was his first in the NFL.

Offensive line

The protection wasnt there in the first half, but Smith had time to throw in the second half when the 49ers went primarily with the shotgun formation.

Defensive line

The 49ers run defense was not nearly as it has been for most of the season. Ryan Grant rushed for 129 yards and a TD on 21 carries.

The 49ers outside linebackers were not good in the run game, and they got very little pressure on Aaron Rodgers in the first half as the Packers built up a 20-point lead.

Defensive back

It was a tough day for Tarell Brown, who gave up some plays and did not secure the tackles. Shawntae Spencer also surrendered some key third-down catches in first half.

Special teams

Andy Lee averaged 51.8 yards, including a net 45.2. Josh Morgan injected some life in the return game with a 76-yarder in the second half. Joe Nedney made a 46-yard FG.

Sure, the 49ers fought back in the second half. But most of the damage had already been done. They were dominated in all areas of the game and were forced to scramble in the second half.
