Two bodies were recovered Thursday afternoon from waters near Bodega Bay, the Coast Guard reported.

The body of an elderly man in his 80s was found after it had washed ashore near Salmon Creek shortly after 1:30 p.m., said Damien Jones, supervising ranger at the Sonoma Coast State Park

The second body was recovered around 4:15 p.m. after being spotted by a Coast Guard helicopter crew.

An overturned boat was found nearby, said Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Jeremy Pichette in San Francisco.

The discovery of the two bodies came after a 20-foot boat with two men on board failed to return after going to sea Thursday morning.

The names of the two victims have not been released and officials could not confirm that the bodies were those of the missing men.

The Coast Guard first received a call about 1:30 p.m. of a boat capsized in the surf and sent out two search boats and a rescue helicopter, said Erik Watson, executive petty officer of the Coast Guard station in Bodega Bay.

Sonoma Coast State Park rangers also participated in the search with individual watercraft.
