Record number apply for fewer CSU spots

<p>California State University has received a record number of undergraduate applications for a shrinking number of seats.</p><p>CSU officials said Tuesday the 23-campus system had received about 610,000 applications for fall 2010 by Nov. 30, up from 477,000 at the same time last year.</p><p>Seventeen CSU campuses have already closed admissions for freshman applicants, and 15 have closed admissions for transfer students.</p><p>The sharp increase in applications comes as the 450,000-student CSU system seeks to cut enrollment by about 40,000 over two years.</p>
