California State University has received a record number of undergraduate applications for a shrinking number of seats.

CSU officials said Tuesday the 23-campus system had received about 610,000 applications for fall 2010 by Nov. 30, up from 477,000 at the same time last year.

Seventeen CSU campuses have already closed admissions for freshman applicants, and 15 have closed admissions for transfer students.

The sharp increase in applications comes as the 450,000-student CSU system seeks to cut enrollment by about 40,000 over two years.
