Fire all but destroyed a home on Pacific View Drive in Jenner Tuesday afternoon after a log had been placed on a wood stove.
Jenner resident Gail Daley, 63, had put a wet log on top of a wood-burning stove to dry it out, said Steve Baxman, police chief for the Monte Rio Fire District. When the log began to smoke she placed it on a deck.
Soon after, Daley noticed a deck chair had caught fire, and she ran to a neighbor’s home to call 911, Baxman said.
Fire fighters arrived at the home just after 2 p.m. and extinguished the blaze within 45 minutes, Baxman said, but not before the house was severely damaged.
“It’s re-buildable, but it’s got extensive damage,” Baxman said. “The roof is there and the walls are there, but it was a heck of a fire.”
Baxman estimated the single-story, 1,800-square-foot home sustained $450,000 damage. Antiques worth about $100,000 also were destroyed.
