A fatal collision that closed Silverado Trail in central Napa Valley for most of Wednesday morning took the lives of two men traveling in separate cars - one as a driver and one as a passenger, the CHP said.
Napa resident Saul Alvarez-Ayala, 46, died at the scene of the 5:48 a.m. collision in which he was a passenger in a Honda Accord that was struck by an out-of-control vehicle north of Skellenger Lane, authorities said.
The driver of the spinning Mustang, Clearlake resident Augustine Quezada, 29, died several hours later at Queen of the Valley Hospital, where was taken with critical injuries.
Medics had planned to airlift Quezada onto Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment, but his condition deteriorated too rapidly, CHP Officer Jaret Paulson said.
Paulson said Quezada was southbound on Silverado Trail when he lost control of the 2006 Mustang on rain-slicked pavement and spun into the opposing lane.
The Mustang spun 180 degrees and was sliding backward when it struck the front of the northbound 1991 Accord, Paulson said.
The impact killed Alvarez-Ayala and injured the Accord's driver, Napa resident Jorge Mora, 22, who was being treated at Queen of the Valley Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, Paulson said.
The crash also left significant wreckage and closed Silverado Trail between Skellenger Lane and Highway 128 for about four hours while crews cleared the roadway and authorities investigated the crash.
