Sonoma County law officers arrested 47 motorists over the weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, kicking off a 17-day campaign called Avoid the 13.
Eleven drivers were nabbed Friday, 15 on Saturday and 21 on Sunday, Petaluma Police Sgt. Ken Savano said.
Officers arrested an additional five people with outstanding DUI warrants, he said. All of the arrests were made by officers on roving DUI patrol throughout the county.
The name Avoid the 13 is based on the 13 agencies participating in the campaign that runs through Jan. 3. They are Cloverdale, Cotati, Healdsburg, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Sonoma, Windsor, Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State University police, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office and the CHP.
Officers will be deployed on DUI patrols in every Sonoma County community in during the 17-day campaign, Savano said.
Traffic checkpoints will be conducted every weekend during the campaign period at locations that will not be disclosed to the public, he said.
During the 2008 winter holiday DUI campaign, 176 people were arrested, there were four DUI-related deaths with 21 DUI-related injuries.
There were two drunken-driving collisions Sunday in Santa Rosa resulting in three people sustaining minor injuries. Details about the collisions were unavailable Monday, Savano said.
