A surfer in distress at the base of a 400-foot cliff near Highway 1 and Meyers Grade Road was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries Friday morning.

The surfer may have fallen while trying to reach a remote surfing spot, said Russian River Fire Capt. Rob Cassady.

Emergency responders from several agencies “went over the side of the cliff and made it down to where the surfer was located,” Cassady said.

But they were unable to move the surfer from the area.

CHP and Coast Guard officials dispatched helicopters from San Francisco early afternoon and a CHP helicopter transported the surfer to the hospital.

No more details about the surfer's identity or injuries were available Friday afternoon.

Preliminary reports to emergency dispatchers that a woman drove a car off a cliff were incorrect.
