Vote for the Best of Sonoma County SO SONOMA COUNTY finalists: Best beach, picnic spot and more!

49ers report card

Quarterback: C

Alex Smith statistically had a very good game with 230 yards passing, one touchdown, and a passer rating of 97.5. But there were plenty of throws that were not on the mark.

Running back: C

Frank Gore rushed for 71 yards on 28 carries with a touchdown, but he also lost a fumble to give the Lions good field position in the fourth quarter.

Receivers: C

Michael Crabtree had a 50-yard reception in the first quarter. It could have gone for a TD if he hadn't bobbled it. Vernon Davis caught a short TD pass.

Offensive line: C

There appeared to be a miscommunication on Smith's first pass attempt that resulted in a sack. Smith had time to throw, but Gore did not have a lot of running room.

Defensive line: A

Aubrayo Franklin and Justin Smith did a good job of clogging run lanes, as Maurice Morris managed just 37 yards on 18 rushing attempts.

Linebackers: A

Patrick Willis had a game-high nine tackles and an interception. Takeo Spikes and Manny Lawson both had two tackles for losses. Spikes and Ahmad Brooks had sacks.

Defensive back: A

Dre Bly and Dashon Goldson recorded interceptions. Bly also had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Special teams: B

Andy Lee had a 45.2 punting average (net 40.2) on six punts. New kicker Ricky Schmitt made kicks from 33 and 39 yards, but had a 28-yarder blocked.

Coaching/overall: CC

The 49ers played something well short of a masterpiece. Despite a defense that provided great field position, the 49ers managed only two touchdowns against one of the leagues worst teams.
