Quake damage in Eureka climbs to $22 million

<p>EUREKA — Officials in the Northern California city of Eureka say damage from this weekend's earthquake has climbed to nearly $22 million.</p><p>Gary Bird, a spokesman for the city, said Tuesday the latest figure from the magnitude-6.5 temblor reflects damage to 240 buildings. It is up from $14.3 million for 175 buildings on Monday.</p><p>Eureka is the largest city affected by Saturday's quake centered in the Pacific Ocean about 22 miles west of Ferndale.</p><p>Bird says officials are continuing to assess buildings, and he expects the damage estimate to climb even higher.</p><p>Damage estimates for Humboldt County were expected to take several days. County officials did not immediately return calls Tuesday morning.</p><p>Saturday's quake sent about 30 people to emergency rooms, but only one was seriously injured.</p>
