A magnitude 3.0 earthquake that struck off the Humboldt County coast early Saturday was one of dozens to hit the area over the past week, apparent aftershocks of a Jan. 10 tremor that caused more than $30 million in estimated damage.

The 3.0 shaker occurred at 1:39 a.m. about 31 miles west of Eureka, according to a preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey.

A 2.9 magnitude quake also struck at 6:09 a.m. Saturday, 27 miles west-southwest of Eureka, the USGS said.

More than 40 minor quakes have hit the area, clustered west and west-northwest of Ferndale and west of Eureka, which suffered most of the damage during a 6.5 magnitude quake at 4:27 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency throughout Humboldt County to help pave the way for repairs.

Only one person was seriously injured in the Jan. 10 quake.
