A Point Arena man was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with an unprovoked pepper spray assault, law officials said.

Marucs Meloy, 19, allegedly walked up to Emilio Rivera, 29, as he stood in the doorway of his Port Road apartment and sprayed him in the face, said Mendocino County Sheriff’s Capt. Kurt Smallcomb.

The victim said he doesn’t know Meloy and that there’s no reason for the assault, he said.

Meloy was arrested after the victim pointed him out to deputies.

Meloy eventually showed them the canister of “Disabler” pepper spray he used in the assault, Smallcomb said.

He was booked into the Mendocino County jail on $15,000 bail.
