This week’s picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):

D Arie, 2007 Block 4, Shenandoah Valley, Primitivo, $25, 14.9 percent alcohol. Bright and tangy with layered flavors. Notes of Bing cherry, anise, pepper and a hint of caramel.

J Vineyards, 2007 Barrel 16, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, $35, 14.4 percent. A sleek pinot noir with a lush texture. Notes of black and red fruit, with herbs, spice and a hint of caramel. Long finish.

Wilson, Carl’s Reserve, 2007 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, $44, 15.6 percent. A spicy zin with aromas and flavors of blackberry, black cherry, anise, black pepper and caramel. Zesty.

Patz & Hall, 2007 Pisoni Vineyards, Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, $80, 14.8 percent. A smoky, earthy pinot with ripe and concentrated flavors. Notes of dried cherry, herbs and white pepper. Elegant.

Chappellet, 2002 Napa Valley, Signature Cabernet Sauvignon, $75, 14.5 percent. A cab with firm tannins and notes of black cherry, a hint of plum. cedar and chocolate. Long finish.
