A Eureka woman died Tuesday night, hours after her van collided with a truck as she tried to drive across Highway 101 in southern Petaluma, the CHP reported Wednesday.

Lonetta Sayers, 62, and her husband Russell Sayers, 62, Tuesday afternoon had pulled off of the highway at a gas station near Kastania Road, CHP Sgt. Allan Capurro said.

At about 2:15 p.m. she attempted to get back onto the highway heading north.

As Sayers started across the first southbound lane she pulled into the path of a 2000 Chevy S10 truck, which hit the left side of her 2007 Dodge Caravan.

Lonetta Sayers appeared to have suffered moderate injuries and was able to talk to emergency workers at the crash. Russell Sayers had a broken bone and other moderate injuries.

Both were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. But hours later she was flown to Stanford Medical Center, and died of her injuries.

The driver of the truck, Michael Conway, 29, had minor injuries.

The crash backed up traffic extensively in both directions for about one hour, Capurro said.
