When the 49ers reached a contract agreement with free-agent quarterback David Carr this week, it meant backup Shaun Hill's days in San Francisco would be coming to an end.
The 49ers are apparently waiting on Carr to return the signed agreement before making the move official, a source said.
The 49ers gave Hill permission to “seek a trade,” which enables Hill and his agent to begin talks with other teams. There might be some interest in Hill, who recorded a 10-6 record as the 49ers' starting quarterback in parts of three seasons.
The most likely destination for Hill would appear to be the Detroit Lions, where he has history with offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and could serve as the backup to Matthew Stafford, the No. 1 overall pick in 2008.
Carr has yet to deliver the official signed contract. The paperwork was sent to him at his hotel in Cabo San Lucas, where he and his wife, Melody, went on vacation after his visit to Santa Clara last weekend to meet with 49ers coaches and executives.
Carr, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, is expected to deliver the contract to the team when he reports for the offseason condition program, which begins Monday.
In other news, the 49ers have arranged a free-agent visit with linebacker Akin Ayodele, whom the Dolphins recently released. Ayodele, 30, has never missed a game in his eight-year NFL career. He could challenge Takeo Spikes for a starting job.
Also, the 49ers are scheduled to meet with free-agent guard Chester Pitts from the Houston Texans. Pitts entered the NFL at the same time as Carr and played all 16 games for the Texans during each of his first seven seasons.
Pitts underwent season-ending surgery on his right knee in September after playing just two games. He had a procedure to repair the meniscus cartilage and also had microfracture surgery on the articular cartilage. He had started the first 114 games of his career.
The NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported that 49ers coach Mike Singletary is likely to attend the workout for troubled Adam “Pacman” Jones on Friday in New Orleans. Jones has sat out two of the past three NFL seasons due to various off-field incidents.
