The 49ers gave quarterback Shaun Hill permission to seek a trade last week. On Sunday, the team agreed to trade Hill to the Detroit Lions for a seventh-round pick in the 2011 draft, according to a league source.
Hill, 30, is set to become the Lions' backup to Matthew Stafford, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft. Scott Linehan is the Lions' offensive coordinator. Linehan was Minnesota's offensive coordinator for three of Hill's four seasons with the Vikings.
Hill lost his spot on the 49ers' depth chart when the club agreed to terms with quarterback David Carr on a two-year, $6.25 million salary.
The 49ers have yet to announce the transactions because Carr went on a vacation to Mexico and had not signed the contract. He is expected to deliver the document when he reports to Santa Clara for the 49ers' offseason program, which begins Monday.
The completion of the trade is contingent on Carr's contract, as well as Hill passing a Lions team physical. As of Sunday evening, Hill had not been informed about the trade by anyone with the 49ers or the Lions, said a source close to him.
Hill did not attempt a regular-season pass in his first five NFL seasons. After injuries to Alex Smith and Trent Dilfer, he won both of his starts in 2007 on a team that finished with a 5-11 record.
His steady play at the end of the 2008 season was one of the big reasons the 49ers won five of their final seven games, enabling Mike Singletary — who took over at midseason for fired Mike Nolan — to be elevated to the permanent coaching job.
Hill started the first six games last season before Smith replaced him at halftime against the Houston Texans on Oct. 25, trailing 21-0. Hill did not play for the remainder of the season. The 49ers were 10-6 in his 16 career starts.
