For those who overindulge on alcohol today on St. Patrick's Day, AAA Northern California will get drivers and their cars home safely for free.
The organization's "Tipsy Tow" program, which offers drinking drivers a tow home of up to five miles, will be available from 6 p.m. today to 6 a.m. Thursday throughout Northern California, Nevada and Utah.
Drivers, passengers, party hosts, bartenders and restaurant managers may call (800) 222-4357 and tell the AAA operator, "I need a Tipsy Tow," said Matt Skryja, AAA Northern California spokesman.
The service is open to the public and does not require AAA membership, he said.
Callers will get a one-way ride for the driver and vehicle to the driver's home. Passengers will be taken to the driver's home, as well, providing there is room for them to be transported safely in the tow truck.
AAA estimates that a first-time DUI conviction in California can cost up to $12,000 in fines, penalties, restitution, legal fees and added insurance expenses.
