Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out restaurant wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):

Calstar, 2008 Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc, 13.7 percent, $19. A tasty sauvignon blanc with notes of grapefruit, gooseberry and lemon. Zesty finish.

Foursight, 2008 Anderson Valley Sauvignon Blanc, 14.1 percent, $20. A full-bodied sauvignon blanc with notes of grapefruit, herbs, lemon and lime. Balanced.

White Oak, 2008 Russian River Valley Chardonnay, 13.9 percent, $24. A toasty chardonnay with tropical fruit flavors. Notes of pear, apple, lime, herbs and spice. Long finish.

Unti, 2007 Petit Frere Sonoma County Rhone Red, 14.9 percent, $20. A smoky, leathery Rhone red with a good concentration of fruit. The blend has 44 percent syrah, 38 percent grenache and 18 percent mourvedre.

Robert Craig, 2007 Affinity Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5 percent, $48. A cab with silky tannins. Notes of black cherry, herbs, spice and mocha. Seamless.
