Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out restaurant wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):
Foursight, 2009 Anderson Valley Gewurztraminer, 14.1 percent alcohol, $20. A tasty gewürztraminer with notes of tangerine, grapefruit, lime, herbs and spice. A crisp, tart finish.
Kokomo, 2008 Cuvee Dry Creek Valley Red Wine, 14.2 percent, $22. A supple red blend with bright fruit. Aromas and flavors of boysenberry, anise and spice. Juicy.
Mueller, 2007 Russian River Valley Old Vine Zinfandel, 15.9 percent, $29. A big, ripe zin with notes of blueberry, plum, anise, mineral, roasted coffee, vanilla and spice.
Bella, 2007 Lily Hill, Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, 15 percent, $38. Ripe but elegant. Layered, with notes of raspberry, licorice, white pepper and mineral. Spicy finish.
St. Francis, 2007 Montecillo Vineyard Zinfandel, 16.2 percent, $40. A ripe, juicy, jammy zin with a snappy finish. Aromas and flavors of boysenberry, raspberry, herbs and spice. Powerful.
