Novato school vandalism called hate crime

<p>NOVATO — Authorities say they are investigating hate crimes committed during two break-ins at a Marin County high school in which vandals spray-painted the student center with obscenities and offensive symbols.</p><p>Novato police would not say exactly what the vandals spray-painted Friday and again Monday night or early Tuesday at San Marin High School.</p><p>Emily Gates, a music teacher, describes the painting as racist and "disgusting."</p><p>Police say the graffiti was directed at the school administration and students.</p><p>The vandals also apparently stole flashlights, wire cutters and some props used in a production of "Chicago" by the Marin Summer Theater group.</p>
