A Santa Rosa driver crossed over double yellow lines and caused a three-car crash on Highway 12 in Glen Ellen Sunday night, sending three people to area hospitals with major injuries, the CHP reported.
The 9 p.m. crash also closed the highway, west of Madrone Road, for about two hours.
CHP officers Monday were investigating whether driver Edgar Ramirez, 30, was intoxicated when he drove into oncoming traffic, said CHP Officer Mark Freeman.
Ramirez, driving a Nissan sedan, smashed head on into a Honda CRV driven by Stacy Burmer, 44, of Sanger.
Behind Burmer was 27-year-old Jessica Petro of Santa Rosa. She swerved her Acura to try to avoid the oncoming car but hit the Honda and a guardrail, the CHP said.
Glen Ellen firefighters had to extricate some of the people trapped in two of the cars.
Ramirez was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with severe injuries.
Burmer was flown to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, also with severe injuries. Passenger Debra Skelton, 40, of Sanger, was sent to Memorial.
Driver Petro complained of pain but also was sent to Memorial.
Information on their conditions wasn't available Monday morning.
