Firefighters from three agencies quickly doused a fire behind a popular sushi bar and two-story commercial building in downtown Ukiah on Thursday morning.
The blaze broke out shortly after 7:30 a.m. in a long, covered storage area between two brick buildings on West Church Street just of South State Street, Ukiah Fire Operations Chief Kevin Jennings said.
Once an open breezeway, the area measured 6-to-8-feet across and about 50 feet in length, Jennings said. It was used for storage and waste disposable by Oco Sushi.
Masonry construction on either side prevented it from spreading, he said.
The fire “consumed quite a bit of stuff, but it was contained in this space between two buildings,” Jennings said.
It appeared the fire was likely accidental, though an exact cause had not been determined.
“My investigators are still there looking through the rubble right now,” Jennings said Thursday afternoon.
