Collect oral histories

Free Community Listening Project workshops are coming up at the Volunteer Center. Conducted by nonprofit Listening for a Change, they include workshops from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 3, April 7 and June 2. Participants learn in four hours how to collect authentic oral histories. Open board position

CHILDREN'S VILLAGE

Many ways to help kids

The Children's Village is looking for a volunteer site superintendent. Needed is someone with basic handyperson skills who can volunteer to oversee maintenance of the houses and grounds, work with the site committee to develop a maintenance plan, perform light repairs and identify situations that need the attention of an expert technician. Other volunteers are also needed to help perform the maintenance.

Volunteers also are needed to be part of a rotating crew to help clean the houses and site, work in the office and help with fund raising, events planning and other public relations activities.

SONOMA SERVES

Book fair showcase

Sonoma SERVES will partner with Barnes and Noble in a program showcase and book fair Saturday to benefit literacy and after-school programs. The event will celebrate student achievement in the arts and education.

A portion of the proceeds from book purchases will benefit students from the Bellevue, Roseland and Wright elementary school districts. Family-oriented activities include story time, performances and arts and crafts.

The fair is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Barnes and Noble, 700 Fourth St., Santa Rosa.

Sonoma SERVES, based at Sonoma State University's California Institute on Human Services, provides mentoring and educational opportunities for children and their families.

ALTERNATIVE RECREATION COALITION

Saturday bowling league

The Alternative Recreation Coalition is asking for volunteers for its bowling program for people with disabilities. Volunteer helpers are needed for the 9:30 a.m. to noon games on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, and from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Youth, senior and student volunteers are encouraged to get involved.

RUSSIAN RIVERKEEPERS

Days at the park

Help restore riverbank habitat. Restoration activities include planting and caring for native plants, weeding, erosion control, restoration education and trash removal. Everyone is welcome.

Students can receive volunteer credit for participating.

Workdays are Wednesdays, Dec. 6 and 13, and each Wednesday beginning Jan. 3 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes.

Meet at 16153 Main St., Guerneville, located on the north bank of the Russian River directly upstream from the pedestrian bridge. Access is down a driveway west of Woody's River Glass. At the bottom of the driveway look for the blue-and-white sign that says, "Russian Riverkeeper Demonstration Riparian Restoration Project Future Community Park."

Parking is available near the sign.

GIVING TREE

Spread holiday cheer

Work at Good Heart Central at the fairgrounds through Dec. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays or from noon to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Like riding bikes? Like helping other people learn how to fix them? Speak Spanish?

Community Bikes is looking for a Spanish translator who is willing to be trained in bike maintenance so that he or she can instruct others.
