Eleven motorists were arrested Friday night at a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint in Cloverdale, where officers screened a total of 1,481 vehicles in six hours.

Two drivers were arrested for DUI, bringing the total for an 18-day special enforcement period to 134 DUI arrests, said Petaluma Police Sgt. Ken Savano, coordinator of the Avoid the 13 — Sonoma County DUI Task Force.

The crackdown on intoxicated and unlicensed drivers continues tonight and Sunday night with checkpoints at undisclosed locations in the county, Savano said.

Friday night’s checkpoints were on Cloverdale Boulevard at Tarman Drive from 6 p.m. to midnight.

In addition to the DUI arrests, nine drivers were cited for either driving on a suspended license or for driving without a license, Savano said.

Eight vehicles were towed, including six that were impounded for 30 days for license violations.

The special enforcement period began Aug. 20 and continues through Monday. Savano said there have been no fatal alcohol-related collisions during the period, but five people have been injured in five DUI-related collisions.

During a similar 18-day campaign last year, police arrested 252 drivers for DUI, he said. There were eight alcohol-related collisions that injured 10 people.
