The Healdsburg City Council on Tuesday will review options for saving the historic Russian River bridge.
The narrow, 89-year-old Healdsburg Avenue Bridge should be preserved as a bicycle and pedestrian crossing with a modern bridge constructed next to it, according to the "preferred alternative" of consultants Omni-Means Ltd.
But the recommendation has not proved popular with bridge preservationists, who question the need for building a concrete span adjacent to the steel-truss, 1921 bridge.
Consultants favor a $25 million project that would result in a new bridge and some seismic retrofit of the old one.
