Attendance at Santa Rosa Junior College dropped more than 6 percent this semester compared to the same time in 2009, according to the college's census report.

The drop was in line with a similar reduction in the number of classes offered at the college. In response to state budget woes, SRJC cut the number of sections from 2,965 in fall 2009 to 2,778 this fall, a 6.1 percent drop.

Fewer students signed up for full-time course loads. In fall of 2009, 8,930 students took 12 units or more. In fall 2010, 8,522 did, a 4.6 percent drop.

But as a whole, SRJC students are taking more classes. While total attendance dropped nearly 6.4 percent, the number of units they are taking dropped just 1.3 percent, meaning the average class load increased.

“We have less students, but they are taking more classes,” said Diane Traversi, SRJC's director of admissions and enrollment.

The attendance figures were taken from the first week of September after the deadline for students to add a class.
