The Children's Museum of Sonoma County — right now a mobile workshop of wonder inspired by the fabulous Bay Area Discovery Museum — will have a home of its own, effective Nov. 1.

That day, a new lease gives museum founder Collette Michaud and her organization the use of a church building on West Steele Lane, next to the Schulz Museum.

The building owner, Jeannie Schulz, is as eager as anyone to see a hands-on children's museum (childrensmuseumnb.org) take root and blossom in Santa Rosa.

Money must be raised, renovations completed, interactive exhibits designed and constructed, and landscaping put in place before the Children's Museum opens its doors — the target date for welcoming the first kids is mid-2012.

The quest for a top-rate kids' museum leaped forward at a kick-off luncheon at the Vineyard Creek Hotel, where about 300 fired-up supporters kicked in more than $100,000.
