The David Thom Band plays bluegrass the old-fashioned way: no amps or monitors, but a single microphone. This approach affords a tight, blended sound at every performance, and also gives the listener something to watch as the band works around the mic to create the audio mix. They are no strangers to the standard repertoire of bluegrass, but also play some original songs.
The band's leader and front man, David Thom, sets the pace for the group. He sings lead vocals and plays lead guitar. He hoists his guitar high when he goes for a break on the single mic. Andy Shaw, Mary Shaw and Paul Shelasky round out the band.
"The David Thom Band is a group of young, talented musicians who play traditional and contemporary bluegrass music with the right attitude,” said Grisman. “Having jammed with them several times, I heartily recommend that you check them out."
"The David Thom Band plays hard-driving bluegrass, steeped in the tradition while tempered by contemporary sensibilities, said Peter Thompson, who hosts the Bluegrass Signal program on San Francisco radio station KALW 91.7 FM. “The band's delight in playing and singing their brand of bluegrass is infectious, and their performances are always big fun."
