Suspected drunken driver, poacher arrested in Petaluma

Calls about an erratic driver led to the arrest Saturday of a suspected bird poacher and drunken driver.

Petaluma police stopped Kenneth Robert Calkins Jr., 45, of Novato about 6 p.m. Saturday after spotting his vehicle speeding and running stop signs near Payran and Madison streets.

Police said Calkins got out of his vehicle and challenged the officer to fight. Other officers responded and Calkins was taken into custody without incident, Lt. Mike Cook said.

Officers said they found a shotgun and ammunition, which Calkins is prohibited from owning because of prior convictions, Cook said.

Officers also said they found evidence that suggested Calkins had been poaching gamebirds. State Fish and Game officers were called to investigate.

Calkins was booked into Sonoma County on charges of firearm possession, violating a court order, DUI and resisting arrest. His bail was $20,000.
