Foxes in the Henhouse

<p>Singer Pamela Joyce knew for quite some time that she wanted to form an all-girl band, because dang it, she was always the only girl in the band and she just knew it would be really fun to have a band with just girls. So she thought about it for about two minutes and immediately realized she knew some gal musicians in Petaluma that had always wanted to play music with, and before you could shake a tail feather, she called Dorian Bartley, Kathy Mezger and Elaine Lucia and soon all the gals were at the house and drinking a bit of wine and playing some songs together when they could stop laughing long enough to just get down to it. That was a year ago and that's just how the Foxes in the Henhouse got started.</p><p>Joyce's rich and powerful voice has been featured in the bands D'Bunchovus and FunkSway. She's a strong rhythm guitar player, and also plays ukulele, harmonica, cajon and washboard. </p><p>Dorian Bartley has played upright bass and sung with the trio “The Artifacts” for 15 years. That band is popular for its mix of bluesy Americana songs and stellar musicianship. Bartley keeps the Foxes movin' along with her steady bass beat and the songs she leads on are always a very cool mix of blues with a hint of gospel in her vocal delivery. </p><p>Kathy Mezger has been singing close harmonies since she started a three-piece band in high school, singing the songs of the day, especially Joni Mitchell, who was teaching her how to sing jazz before she realized it. Kathy played with many prominent Portland and Eugene, Oregon jazz musicians. She also played in a women's band called Wolf Creek, playing bass and singing country, folk, bluegrass, swing, and whatever else the cat dragged in. She brings her folk and bluegrass singing together with her mandolin and guitar playing. Mezger continues to sing jazz and performs solo with her guitar in the Sonoma and Marin county areas.</p><p>Elaine Lucia has been singing professionally since age 12, about the age that she taught herself to play guitar off of James Taylor, Phoebe Snow and Joni Mitchell LPs. She's been fronting her own jazz bands for several years and released a few CDs and played at lots of nice venues and festivals. But she very rarely performed as a guitarist or songwriter during all that time. Now, she enjoys playing guitar in the all-girl Foxes band, and thrills to hear the other Foxes singing harmony with her on her original songs. </p><p>The newest member of Foxez in the Henhouse is fiddle player Linda Sullivan. Sullivan has been a Sonoma County Resident for 32 years. Her musical background of 28 years as violinist with the Santa Rosa Symphony adds melodic sweetness to the sound of the Foxes. Sullivan always had a passion for traditional old-time and bluegrass music.
