After each 49ers' home game this season, Press Democrat staff writer Phil Barber will grade the team's effort. Following are his grades for Sunday's win over the Seattle Seahawks at Candlestick Park:
49ERS REPORT CARD
Alex Smith did well on the rare occasions when Harbaugh unshackled him.
Frank Gore didn't seem to run with a lot of explosiveness. Alex Smith had team's best per-carry average at 3.1.
Michael Crabtree was a nonfactor. Everyone else was just OK.
Offensive Line: B
Excellent pass protection from a unit that was often savaged during exhibition season.
Defensive Line: A
Justin Smith and Ray McDonald had big sacks, and Will Tukuafu recovered a fumble.
Parys Haralson had his best game in years. Patrick Willis sealed win with fumble recovery.
Defensive Backs: B
Solid work for the most part, though they did allow TD receptions by Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin.
Special Teams: A
Besides Ginn's return, David Akers was 4-for-4 on FGs, and punter Andy Lee had a 54.2 net average.
Harbaugh's play-calling was conservative, but the opener vs. Seattle was much better than a year ago.
