Kids help design new Roseland playground

  • Roseland Elementary School second-grader Esmeralda Juarez talks Tuesday about her dream playground plans, held up by KaBoom! project manager Jen Gallagher. The kids who helped design a new playground planned for Roseland Elementary School in Santa Rosa on Tuesday weren't thinking only of swings and slides.

They also suggested a climbing wall, zip line, secret tunnel and VIP room.

“We'll try to incorporate as many of the kids' ideas as possible,” said Hazel Whiteoak of Sonoma County Community Action Partnership, a partner in the project.

Parents and professional playground planners also will have input.

The community group has joined forces with KaBoom, a national nonprofit organization that restores old playgrounds and builds new ones. Pacific Gas & Electric Co. is providing a grant for the project.

It will replace a worn-out playground on the elementary school campus, Whiteoak said.

KaBoom will supervise a volunteer effort to build the playground on Dec. 3.
