The Committee on the Shelterless is making a big push to meet its goal of collecting 450 turkeys to feed Petalumans.

As of Tuesday morning, COTS has received 194 turkeys, so 256 more needed by the end of the day Friday,” according to Elizabeth Hale, director of food programs for COTS. “That's 64 turkeys per day,” said Hale.

She sent out an appeal to the public this morning to help COTS meet its goal, so that the less fortunate members of our community will have a hearty Thanksgiving dinner.

COTS is asking people to buy a frozen turkey, 20 pounds or less, and bring it to the Mary Isaak Center, 900 Hopper St. between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. by this Friday.

COTS is asking the public to donate turkeys because markets limit the number of turkeys each customer can purchase.

Donated turkeys should be frozen — not cooked or thawed — for food safety purposes.

COTS also operates the Petaluma Kitchen, which offers a free Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings each year.
