Levi Leipheimer of Santa Rosa was the overall winner Sunday in the Tour de San Luis in Argentina. Omega Pharma Quick Step teammate Tom Boonen took the final stage. Another teammate, Francesco Chichi won two previous stages.
Leipheimer ended the race 46 seconds ahead of Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank) and 1 minute, 31 seconds ahead of Argentinian rider Daniel Diaz (San Luis Somos Todos).
Stefan Schumacher (Christina Watches-Ofone) and last year’s winner Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) were fourth and fifth.
“I’m really happy, it was a super fantastic experience to be a part of this team in this race,” Leipheimer said.
“We worked well together and we all made sacrifices for one another; this is why we were successful. I’m thrilled to have assisted with Chicchi’s victories - he seems to have rediscovered his stride – and with Tom, who hadn’t had a win in a while. On this team no one balks when they’re asked to do a job.”
