Five Santa Rosa Middle School students became ill Friday after drinking a substance police believe was tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, a chemical derived from marijuana, Santa Rosa police officials said.

A 13-year-old girl had brought the substance in a container and mixed it with Gatorade during lunch on the E Street campus, Sgt. David Linscomb said. She passed it around to four other students, a group that included boys and girls ages 13 and 14, he said.

Sometime after lunch, several of the students complained of dizziness and stomach discomfort to a school nurse, Linscomb said.

School officials called police at about 1:25 p.m.

One girl, age unspecified, was taken to a hospital and later released, he said. The other four students were released to their parents.

Anyone with information about the case can call Officer Richard Boehm at 543-4068.
