Mendocino County authorities were looking Wednesday for a Point Arena man suspected of shooting a woman during a domestic violence incident outside her home early Wednesday morning, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office said.

The woman was shot once in the upper back with a handgun shortly before 1 a.m., apparently as she fled her assailant to seek safety at a neighbor's home, Cal Fire and sheriff's personnel said.

The suspect, Dane Kraich, 49, was still at large Wednesday. Deputies who searched the area of the shooting soon afterward were unable to locate him, authorities said.

Initial reports indicated three shots were fired at the victim as she ran from her Buckdridge Road home outside the south coast community, Cal Fire Communications Operator Anthony Massucco said.

She was said to be in and out of consciousness when her neighbor called for help, Massucco said.

She was reported in stable condition later Wednesday, the sheriff's office said.

Her name was not released because she is the victim of domestic violence.

A ground ambulance was staged nearby while sheriff's deputies ensured it was safe for medics to come in, Cal Fire said.

The victims was then taken to Point Arena High School to rendezvous with a Cal Star air ambulance for transport to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Anyone who may know Kraich's whereabouts or who has information about the shooting is asked to call the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office - anonymously, if that's preferred - at (707) 463-4086 or (707) 467-9159.
