Man in Windsor standoff surrenders to police

<p>Windsor police talked a bat-wielding man into surrendering Thursday following an hour-long standoff at a Bluebird Drive home, authorities said.</p><p>The man's family called police at about noon to report he was “breaking furniture, throwing dishes and destroying the inside” of the single-story home, Windsor Police Chief Chris Spallino said.</p><p>The man refused to surrender when police arrived, and additional law enforcement and paramedics were dispatched.</p><p>About 10 patrol cars lined the street outside the home, near the corner of Hembree Lane. Neighbors and family members stood outside yellow police tape. </p><p>Sheriff's deputies, including a police dog unit, stood guard outside the home as negotiators and a brother talked to the man. At one point the man reportedly ate broken glass but then spit it out, according to dispatch reports.</p><p>Windsor police led him out of the home in handcuffs shortly after 1 p.m. A family member gave him a large hug before he was led into a police car.</p><p>Spallino declined to identify the man, saying the matter involved a mental health issue.</p>
