One motorist's quick reaction may have minimized the harm done in a two-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon on Lakeville Highway in south Petaluma, police said.

Blanca Castro, 25, of Santa Rosa swerved onto the right shoulder of road, avoiding a direct head-on crash with an oncoming pickup truck at 12:29 p.m., Petaluma Police Officer Ron Klein said.

Her Honda Accord was totaled, but neither Castro nor the other driver, Noe Lopez, 24, of Vallejo was transported to the hospital.

Lopez was westbound, heading into Petaluma in a Toyota Tacoma pickup when he glanced away from the road and veered into the eastbound lane about one-quarter mile east of the Kaiser Permanente medical offices, Klein said.

Lopez missed two other vehicles before the driver's side of his truck struck the front quarter panel of Castro's Honda. Castro's evasive move “possibly avoided serious injuries,” Klein said.

No citations were issued, and Klein said neither alcohol nor excessive speed was involved. The pickup sustained major damage.

Traffic on Lakeville Highway was reduced to one lane at a time for about an hour.
